Nuclear refugees after large early radioactive releases

چکیده

However improbable, large early radioactive releases from a nuclear power plant would entail major consequences for the surrounding population. In Fukushima, 80,000 people had to evacuate the most contaminated areas around the NPP for a prolonged period of time. Had they remained where they lived, they would have received doses dangerous for their health in the long run. These people have been called “nuclear refugees”. The paper first argues that the number of nuclear refugees is a better measure of the severity of radiological consequences than the number of fatalities, although the latter is widely used to assess other catastrophic events such as earthquakes or tsunami. It is a valuable partial indicator in the context of comprehensive studies of overall consequences. Section 2 makes a clear distinction between long-term relocation and emergency evacuation and proposes a method to estimate the number of refugees. Section 3 examines the distribution of nuclear refugees with respect to weather and release site. The distribution is asymmetric and fat-tailed: unfavorable weather can lead to the contamination of large areas of land; large cities have in turn a higher chance of being contaminated. Variability with respect to site is quite intuitive; however, results show that simulations are far superior to an approach based on population living within 20 or 30 km around the site.

Reconstruction of the Internal Dose in Population from Radioactive Releases

INTRODUCTION The need for retrospective assessments of the internal doses received by members of the public as a result of large environmental releases of radionuclides arose in connection with the atmospheric nuclear weapons tests conducted in the 1950s and 1960s as well as with major radiation accidents. The assessment of the internal exposure is greatly facilitated when measurements of the r...

Best Available Technique (BAT) as an Instrument for the Limitation of Radioactive Substances from Nuclear Power Reactors in Sweden

Traditionally, the concept of ALARA has been the basis for limitation and optimisation of releases of radioactive substances from nuclear power reactors in order to protect human health. In recent years, it has been discussed whether the ALARA principle can be applied also to protect the environment. For the protection of the environment, in particular for non-nuclear pollutants, the precaution...

Adsorption of Radioactive Materials by Green Microalgae Dunaliella Salina from Aqueous Solution

Introduction: Nuclear accidents release large quantities of radioactive materials into the environment. Iodine-131 and cesium-137 are two radionuclides released during nuclear accident, which can pose the greatest cancer risks. These radionuclides can be moved to other areas through rain and wind. The aim of this study was to develop efficient and economical biological...

Potential Radioactive Releases from Commercial Reactors and Spent Fuel*

Commercial nuclear reactors and storage facilities for their spent fuel contain large amounts of radioactive material, and are not designed to resist attack. The US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) has determined, however, that these facilities require only a light defense. This paper shows, without disclosing any sensitive information, that reactors and spent-fuelstorage facilities have vul...

Impacts of the Fukushima nuclear power plants on marine radioactivity.

The impacts on the ocean of releases of radionuclides from the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plants remain unclear. However, information has been made public regarding the concentrations of radioactive isotopes of iodine and cesium in ocean water near the discharge point. These data allow us to draw some basic conclusions about the relative levels of radionuclides released which can be compa...
